Triangle Flat is one of the projects that evolved so much over time. In the beginning of this studio. My partner Jammie Nguyen and I were presented with a painting by the minimalist artist Ellsworth Kelly. Our painting was “yellow relief over red”. From this, our studio lead, Nick Shekerjian, instructed us to make a building of this shape.

Many people took this painting and thought of it as a site and designed their floor plans around it, my partner and I took a different approach. We both believed that it was a section cut of a building. Both shapes on the top and bottom are actually elongated triangle shapes, so that when viewed from the side they are square. This adaptation of the drawing was later morphed into a flat for two people. During the manifestation of this flat we were surprised by the newest instruction. This new building was simply a module of a greater apartment building in Tempe, Arizona.

The first iteration of Triangle Flat that we had would not work as modules, we went back to the drawing board. After many iterations we finalized the design on the next page. We were also tasked to make sure there is enough parking, abides by Tempe height limits, is constructed of CLT, and would fit on the provided site. The reason as to why we made so many iterations of the exterior design is to stay true to our original design at the same time keep Tempe city codes and laws in mind.
